She was sitting by the window pane of her living room, with a coffee mug in her hand as she gazed through the glass, her eyes staring emptily at the sky. The sound of a motorbike passing by the road beneath, shook her out of her reverie. Thoughts unsettled her; thoughts of a distant past; of her first love; her only love.
Her mind wanders off to the memories of the time. She would stand waiting for him, near her house and he would be late every time. Or was she always early? She cannot remember that, but does remember, his dramatic entry.he would suddenly accelerate his motorcycle in full throttle on sight of her. Coming towards her, he would bring the motorcycle to a screeching halt, forming an arc around her. She always hated this thing about him and chided him for his stunts," What if you fell from the bike with this drama of yours?" . His reply was always the same, "If I ever fall, I will fall on your feet, and your love shall never let anything happen to me." She jabbed her hand lightly on his chest, as he chuckled with his reply.
The truth was that he was a very good driver. This little stunt was his way of teasing her, knowing well what her reaction would be. They would cruise all over the city on his bike, for hours as she would chatter on about her life, her friends and the world in general. He was always the patient listener, rarely chipping in his own views on a topic. He loved her voice and she loved the fact that she was so much at ease with him.
She worried a lot for him and he pampered her to the core. Once she asked him to treat her with hot kebab and soup in an afternoon of sweltering heat. Someone else might have reasoned with her, but not he. He never questioned her choice or her wish. He zoomed in his motorcycle all through the city, until he found a guy who was ready to cook the best of the kebabs and a delicious soup for her.
It was a perfect winter day, and they had gone out for a movie. He never enjoyed movies much, but she had insisted, so he tagged along. He had an urgent errand to run, which he rescheduled after the movie. She wanted him to stay, but understood how much his work was important to him. So she never asked him to give up his work for her. But today, she wanted him to stay with her. He had already delayed his work for movie, now how could she stop her? He dropped her off at a place where she could take a bus home and he could turn back to his work. But no, she didn't want him to leave. It was as if, he read her mind and said, "don't worry, I would be back soon." He turned his bike but her eyes followed his trail. He somehow sensed her uneasiness and turned his head to give her a smile. There eyes had just met with each other when a mini truck bumped into his bike, throwing him off the vehicle.
She shrieked in horror as the body landed just beneath her feet. He seemed to have bathed in blood but tried to speak something. In shock, she tried to speak to him, to tell him that everything would be alright, but words seemed to be stuck in her throat.
