All Hail, Common wealth games

I am bit agitated. This is the time of the year, when father makes you help him in filing several forms of taxes.

And then you switch on your TV set, only to watch, why we the humble Indians should always indulge in the tedious process of tax paying.

Every news channel, worth its salt is covering different aspect of corruption in the common wealth games, 2010 to be held in Delhi. The usual intense competition amongst news channel is being helped by the Delhi Government and the organizing committee of the CWG. Hence, everyone is conducting their own investigations and everyone is stumbling upon a new truth.

Headlines Today - Told its viewers, rather showed them about the pathetic conditions of the Stadiums on which crores and crores have been spent.

NDTV - They are mostly focusing on medical equipment supply, I think. Something, which you could easily get in 30,000 rupees, is being bought by the govt for say, 1 lakh rupees. That too from suspicious looking firms. No prizes are being handed out, as to why all this is happening. The Delhi citizens are rich and happy with Sheila Dikshit and her government and also on paying taxes. And I don't even wonder, Why?

Times Now - These people were happy, earlier with the leaked report of Central Vigilance Committee, which had clearly pointed out on several cases of corruption and shoddy works being done. But now they have branched out to United Kingdom, where the government departments are probing into funds transferred from India (the CWG people of India) to Accounts in the United Kingdom. We are talking of millions of pounds here.

No, exact figure is available, but around 30,000 crore rupees and more has already been pumped in, for the CWG. When former Sports Minister, and an ex - IFS officer, Mani Shankar Aiyar tried to say anything against CWG, a lot of hue and cry was raised. He drew criticism from all over, including the media, who forced him to seal his mouth.

For, everyone is saying that CWG,2010 is the Pride of India. We should be proud and thumping our chest with pride.

But I am not interested in sports. I confess, I am the bad guy here. I say, India is not mature enough a country to organize such games.
And I am tensed, for now they want Asian Games and Olympics in India too.

God save my pocket please. For my countrymen have betrayed me. YET AGAIN.

Should we mourn the demise of folk music?

I am a city kid. Born, brought up in a city. Nowadays I get to hear a lot of positives of rapid urbanization of our lands. New, fancy buildings, cosmopolitan cultures, and heaps of aspirations.

But one thing that I feel is being let down is our music. And the style and uniqueness of our music. In earlier times, every region had it's own dialects and hence its own unique music. You had people holding whatever they could gather, and prepare songs and all, almost spontaneously. Someone would get a dholak, another one would get hold of a harmonium and just like that, a band would be formed. We now call it, folk music. And it is almost dead.

Now we have guitars in over priced coffee shops in large cities, and someone waiting to become center of attention would be singing an already popular song. All this, with little annoyance to the other clients of the same joint. Since we already have forgotten our own cultures and our own languages running so fast in this mega affair called life, our songs and their quality is now almost extinct.

True, we should praise, appreciate and enjoy music of the universe.
But does that also mean that we should do that at the cost of our own very music?
Richness of which, has been derived from our own soil and water?

The Mucky world of Hockey India

I had been preparing and researching for a blog based on upcoming Hockey India elections.

Vidya Stokes is one of the tallest leaders of Indian National Congress in the state of Himachal Pradesh. She is also President of Women's Hockey In India.
She is 83 years old. And now wants to lead the entire Hockey bureaucracy in India.

The Sports minister, another Congressman, says that you should be maximum 70 years old to contest the Hockey India elections, otherwise no funds or facilities or support from the Sports ministry would be provided. Hockey India says, to hell with government support, we need a 83 year old person to lead hockey today.

Now, I wanted to write about this in detail, but news channels are showing some very sleazy pictures of a middle aged man smooching and making loving with some very white looking females. The videographer or video analyst as you may call him, has self clicked those pictures to perhaps tell we the Indians, how to up hold integrity of your Nation whenever you are abroad. He himself indulged in prostitutes while the team was touring China and Canada. Sports well is ....

It takes a bit time to digest such things, especially when every news channel of repute is showing you such photographs. But the world of Hockey India is merciless. Hockey is our national sport. It is our national pride. So immediately after this news, we have allegations against the women team coach, Kaushik for allegedly sexually harassing girls and using vulgar language.

It turns out that this coach story is the most interesting. Earlier anonymous complaints about him were largely ignored. But this time around, one of the girls wrote her name and lodged a formal complaint with the Sports Ministry. Since we Indians are very intelligent people, Hockey India decided to make a committee to probe into this. But since they have excellent sense of humor, they did not include any female into this committee.
Anyway, common sense later prevailed one lady was made part of this committee, while efforts were being made to brush the matter under the carpet.

Now, news channels love scandals. Scandals ensure good TRPs and good business. Hence, such an exciting looking scandal should not die so soon. So, as the matter began to die, they brought up ex- players of the women hockey team, who all in unison pointed fingers at the coach's character.

My only question now is

After knowing all this, which parent would send his/her daughter to play hockey with head held high?

Does hockey really deserve the status of National Sport?

Mining a mess in Karnataka

Any Indian, who is a well informed citizen would know of the mess in which Karnataka is at the moment.
One component of mess is Belgaum. The chief minister of Maharashtra, Ashok Chavan, who owes his political career to a very famous politician of his time, YB Chavan; his father. But apparently the younger Chavan does so well in managing his large state and solving all its problems so quickly that now he wants Belgaum, which is a part of Karnataka. So, an issue has been raised, buses have been broken and not what. If the Congress was so concerned about Belgaum, then why not before they raised the issue? Why today?

Speaking of Congress people. They have ruled Karnataka and Maharashtra both for most of the times of their existence. So when Belgaum was witnessing problems, the legislators of the party were busy in protesting the state government, led by the BJP on a corruption issue.

Since, India is a hugely rich and princely country with enormous wealth and style ingrained in our psychi, the people's representatives also let no expense spared for a stylish protest.
That meant, being locked up in the Vidhan Soudha's most sacred place. The temple where State Democracy is run through the legislature. So we had MLAs in some cool pyjamas, spending night in the Assembly. The super rich public of Karnataka (as it appears), provided through taxes money to the MLAs with which they had super delicious dinner served inside the legislature. Including Non Vegetarian food, because the people of Karnataka have so much food and wealth, and zero poverty, their legislatures deserve a sumptuous meal.

The issue in this case was related to iron ore mining case. The chief minister owes his chair to the iron ore lobby of Karnataka, and is doing his best to resolve the issue.
The governor of Karnataka did the best job in the whole episode.
Trained in the old school of Gandhi family sycophancy, where Governors of State are given Raj Bhawans only to break governments for their masters and keeping them in check, Mr. Bharadwaj, went on a spree, spewing venom over the BJP.

The issue of corruption is only for academic speeches and political banter. The Congress wants CBI to probe the cases so that they can go about on a witch hunt. The BJP, wants the Lok ayukta, to investigate, as he is seen as a hero in Karnataka, and since he will be fair and impartial, he will bring to light, the fact that the illegal mining of iron ore was actually sanctioned by the previous congress governments, who gave away the license against policy which was not in favor of mining at that time.

If Karnataka is to lead as an example where Indian Politics is going, well the future seems too bright to be visible at the moment.

Goodbye Waka Waka, Goodbye FIFA 2010

Soccer is one of the sports which you can easily state as truly international. The excitement, the thrill is exhilarating. FIFA, the international body that controls soccer, holds a World Cup every 4 years.

The 2010 of the World Cup has recently concluded and three salient features I have noticed are

1) The vuezela's constant bugging sound ( pardon me, South Africans, I can understand your heritage afflictions) which frankly speaking was annoying.
2) Amazing camera work. The angles, the shots were very good.
3) Very sub standard quality refereeing.

I think, the FIFA people should learn something from cricket and that is the concept of the third umpire. Sure, the match shall be slowed down a little, still quality and fair play will be ensured.

Cricket and ICC in turn should also learn something from FIFA. That is, to keep politicians away from the sport. FIFA handles that part well. They even used their platform for promoting awareness against racism, which was kinda cool.

Keerti, a friend remarked "all the gr8 teams & gr8 players were no whr to see.... :-( "

True, almost all the major players disappointed. Spain, that won the World Cup, won almost all it's matches with scores like, 1-0, 2-1, etc etc. Nothing spectacular happened in any of its game, as expected for a world champion.

Concluding this, I think the biggest and largest influence of this year's world cup is the geographical factors.
Europe still reigns over the World Soccer scene but the space of South American countries is under serious threat from their African counterparts.
The players from the African countries showed exemplary talent, and loads of vigor. What they lacked was polishing and finesse.

And not to forget thing of the FIFA 2010, was Shakira lending her voice to the anthem Waka Waka.

Na ro Munde Di Maa, Na ro (Don't cry, boy's mother, don't cry)

Why is Aman's mother crying and wailing?

Just because she lost her son?

Or because he was just eight years old?

So what, if it was only a minor looking injury?

So what, if the hospital was just nearby to your house?

You got to understand, Aman's mother, it was Prime Minister Manmohan Singh,

who had graced your city with his presence.

You got to understand, Manmohan Singh's life value is much much higher than your son's.

Don't you know, you should not disturb the security people by begging and pleading

Don't you know, PM's movement is much more important than reaching a dying person to the hospital.

You are writing letters to Sonia Gandhi, for you also perhaps know, that Mr. Singh can never do any thing, not even sympathize with you.

You asked for a compensation of ten lakh,
They have refuted the charge, that your son could not have died due to their negligence.
They don't seem to mind,
that your teenage daughter shall always live with the fact that his brother bled to death.
All sixty plus minutes of it.

So don't cry mother, don't cry,
Your son died today,
but someone's son also died similarly last year.
their shall be several more mothers in days to come,
who shall need a shoulder to cry over their child's demise.

Because politicians like prestige and power,
to flaunt it, and to badger it around.

Don't cry mother, Don't cry.

The people don't care,
but you are aware,
you cannot let Aman die in waste
No you cannot.

Stripped down for Love

She looked up through the window, gazing at the horizon. The lights coming out of the buildings nearby, seemed fuzzy yet beautiful as rains lashed out heavily.

After looking out for a minute, as if making up her mind to face the inevitable, she dishes out the cell phone from her bag, and dials the number
"Hey Mom, I would be late, so shall stay over at Nancy's through the night."
The glaring sound of TV from the next door, could not let her to listen to the response of her statement.

Pressing the red button, she dabs a paper napkin over her eyes, and gets ready for her task.
As soon as she enters the next room, the three guys sitting immediately look upon her, excitement dancing in their eyes. The switch off the TV, and ask her to dance. One of them puts on a music track and heightens the volume.

She dances and strips, does everything they command her to do. She is numb to their reactions, for her thoughts are only for him.
He for whom she could have given her life for.
He for whom she was being made to do things beneath contempt.
He for whom the world means to her.
He who would avenge her treatment one day. One fine day.

As she is made to throw away her panties, she closes her eyes shut, and the picture of Mark, her brother, comes to her mind, yet again.
Yes, love can weaken you,
Love can strengthen you,
Love alone can enable you
to move ahead, to urge ahead.

One of the guys, comes towards her with a glass of beer in one hand, and smothers over her breast with the other.
She snatches down the wine glass and gulps down the liquor in one go.

I am dedicating this blog to a group of students (whom I don't personally know) I admire for they are making a documentary to cover cases of child abuse and sexual exploitation in the United States of America.
Sex+Money is their banner, which has a wonderful slogan that reads,
"A national search for human worth."

The Case Of Kodaikanal Public School

In India, rapes and molestations are quite common and frequent, so much so, when I heard about the case of a 14 year old girl filed complaint against a 73 year old man, I just flipped out the channel, ignoring yet another molestation case. Happens each hour of the day, what is new in them?

Although am bit amazed always that I am never shocked or surprised, over such happenings, I have long concluded these news as an Indian way of life. Rapes and molestations have become a part of the Indian Psychi now. Guess what, we may be after all a very pervert society.

So, why am I writing about this case, other than waking up my friends in the society to do something? This case is particularly queer.

A guardian of a 14 year old, Bhutanese girl files a complaint of molestation against ML Brite, a senior citizen of 73 years age and the girl's school principal. Naturally, the old man has denied it but interesting facts are coming out in this case like
1) The girl turns out not to be Bhutanese but Nepalese. Why this confusion of ethnicity, I wonder?
2) Let's suppose, that school authorities are right. The man is innocent. Then why did he run away, the moment, a case of sexual harassment was filed against him?
3) The most bizarre thing in this whole episode is the girl's hostel. 17 girls lived in the girls hostel that was actually, Mr. Brite's own residence. So they all lived with him. In all schools and colleges and universities, good or bad, Indian or foreign, a code of conduct or a policy or a set of rules are maintained for hostel living. Especially for ones housing girls. This is the first case where I have heard, that school girls were residing in their school owner's house. As usual it seems, authorities in India were sleeping for the nation is itself not guarding it's conscious.

Another point here to mention is about Sheeba Paul, the principal of the school. The authorities of the school were quick the dismiss all allegation against the administrator of the school and came in full support of him. Is it possible, (which according to me is) that sexual harassment of girls in that school was a common affair known to all?

That a girl, who was not from the same area, and had come from another land, refused to follow the sexual harassment routine followed and turned rebel?

Then their is the petition in the court, which the accused has filed which states that, the girl's guardians did not want to pay 500 rupees as hostel fees, so she was shifted to the free hostel, which she did not accept and left the school.

This school has around 6-7 associate schools run by the same organization. The website of the school mentions Brite as the Principal of the school, then why now Sheeba Paul is being designated as the principal? Her arrest seems a good idea, and shows some good police work, who have arrested her for aiding Brite. That a woman is an accomplice to sexual harassment of someone of her own sex is shameful but it relates to something I have written before.

Then their is the strange mystery over details of the incident. Most reports in the media state that the girl was sick and when Brite visited her in the medical room, he molested her. Other reports state that she was asked to bring coffee to him one night and was misbehaved with. Seems like another case where media has played a sloppy role, but one can't blame them, with more and fresh cases of sexual assault and rape coming up every day, and some sensational ones like the Kurla case in Mumbai, one is bound to lose track.

In one report however, it has been brought to light that Brite has had a history of offending women.

Ultimate question however hangs and shall hang for long, as to how long shall we allow sloth in Indian education and cleanse the mentality of the society so as to be sensitive to such incidents and protect innocence (which is the real future of the Earth).
